FÉLIX GONZÁLEZ-TORRES´S QUEER ART

The poetic, conceptual, minimalist andcontroversial work of Félix González-Torres has placed among the best artistsfrom the last decades. The great number of shows that have been devoted to his output,including a major exhibition at the Guggenheim are ample proof of thisattention. He was bornin Cuba and grows up in Spain, Puerto Rico, Cuba and then escaped to Americawhere he established himself. Félix González-Torres said in more than oneoccasion that his work could not be separated from his life, marked by the factof being Cuban, homosexual and HIV positive. He was always aware of thesocio-political implications of his work but he saw that as a natural thing,his way of thinking was that all art or cultural production is political. Hismain themes are sexual politics, racism, and the relationship between theartist and the viewer. From a queer theory perspective, his best quality is therejection of the so called gay art, an art limited to whatsome consider as an object of desire for gay men.

The next essays are about his work, in relation todeath and the sense of loss (related to HIV) and relating to gender-politicsand with an extensive reading about influences received in his practice work.

The reproductions are from pictures from Picasso and other artists.

I choose to represent just the male genitals as a response to the gay male gaze.

When exhibiting these pieces I am placing them at a genital level and the title of the work is at eye level.

This is a series of pics of the production of a mural painting for a room at Hotel Bloom in Brussels. The idea was to produce a map of the world. Cities are represented by color dots. No borders and the continents are not in their real positions.

All the drawings were made in wood. They are sculptures from all around Barcelona. I put them together in a box and it was supossed to be sent to an artist book exhibition to Istambul but it was refused as the drawings were not made on paper...On the back of each wood page there is a piece of a poem by Jaime Gil de Biedma, a gay poet from Barcelona.

Work in alternative spaces is always interesting to view as is hearing practitioners discussing their work. It was with these opinions that I approached the out yer tree walk and talk event at Coombe Abbey country park on a somewhat questionable Saturday afternoon in august. I waited at the exhibitions stall in the visitor centre as a crowd of around 30 people gathered to start the event, two o’clock came and we all headed out into the grounds following the exhibition organisers.

The first work we encountered was fellow a-n blogger Hayley Parfitt’s “wildlife stacks” which were quite thinly distributed around an over-grown patch of the park, however despite this they filled the area sufficiently and I feel they could be a beneficial permanent addition to the site’s inhabitants. Unfortunately she was not present to discuss her work so the only explanation given was her artists statement read allowed by one of the event’s organisers which would prove to be the case with several other exhibitors which was a real shame.

We collectively moved onwards and upwards (the park has some steps to navigate) where we were greeted by a flowerbed which had been infested with Avril Elward’s sculptures of vividly coloured, organic forms seemingly growing alongside the flowers. She was the first artist present to discuss her work and did so very quickly suggesting that they were meant to look unpleasant. We were then instructed to simply turn around to view Victoria Redgrave’s “not seen and not heard”; a work which consisted of two salvaged chairs, one much smaller than the other which we were told represents marginalised members of society in a very well prepared speech by the artist. The fact the audience was separated from the work by the lake we had just crossed enforced this separation of people very effectively.
.“Hemispheres” the most expensive work for sale in the show at £1500 was incredibly beautifully fabricated by John Routledge and this beauty attracted the interest of several children’s inquisitive hands which I feel most of the group felt a little uneasy about, again I wished the artist had of been there to get his opinions on his younger fans interest in his reflective surfaces. Jim Biddulph whom had been the voice of the un-present artists up to this point stepped up again, this time to discuss his own work “one of only 3 certainties in life”; A tree mounted sign stating that the viewer should ‘please disregard this sign’ which became interesting when all 30 members of the events audience were made to regard it. “From Me to You” by Victor Jimenez was a set of two benches facing each other under two of the parks attractive trees which were supposed to be a conversation between two male lovers, however their natural look made it difficult for other park users to differentiate between these and other benches in the park and hence when we came to view them they were in use. This Minimal aesthetic, homosexual reference and audience participation (even if it was unintentional) all combined to suggest works by Felix Gonzalez-Torres but again the artist was unable to attend on the day for me to discuss this further with.

Taz Lovejoy (another of the exhibition organisers and current MA student at Coventry University) showed “Hybrid Infusions” a series of five differently coloured spherical objects made of plant pots and hung from branches. Elsewhere in the show she was showing another series of similar spherical hung objects but these were made of broken umbrella's, one of which was unfortunately stolen which is a definite risk of showing in such locations.

Jo Greens second appearance of the exhibition was my favourite work in the show and was a large ‘human’ sun dial, minimal and natural in appearance it was a mathematically complex piece of work which required both the audience’s and natures participation, the latter of which we didn’t receive. The next work was by Mike Dodd who had undoubtedly travelled the furthest both geographically and from his practice, an illustrator by trade he presented a land work made from the sites unused wood and based on a spiral. He also travelled from France to construct this work which was again unfortunately rushed through viewing due to torrential rain.

My overall feeling of the show was that the types of work on show were broad, yet some of the works presentation was a little predictable. I particularly thought works which used the site were most successful and fully utilized the unique opportunity offered by this type of exhibition. I thought that out yer tree as an organisation provided a good amount of printed material including flyers, maps, a children’s quiz and a small scale catalogue which is often something which temporary exhibitions tend to not provide. However I think they could have made more of the format of actually walking around the exhibition somehow and I feel if not on the guided walk it could be possible to miss some pieces of work.

Writer detail: My work deals with playful use and reinterpretation of modernist public space. My work also aims to question the ways we live in these spaces. I believe strongly that spaces should have fluid and enjoyable functions to benefit the public and other more specific social groups as opposed to corporations. Public spaces are for more that eating your sandwich in and being sold things in. I work with sculpture and instillation as well as text, photographs, performance, print and collage...

This is a piece of work that I did last summer at Barnwell Park, Oundle.

I need to find better pictures!

It is a set of toy soldiers on top of canes. The soldiers seem to be in a battle but they have no visible enemy. Only air. I was trying to talk about our own personal battles and strugles.

New project that I hope will be exhibited at Lickey Hills Country Park in Birmingham.

Two park benches facing each other, in one of them we can read: to john, will always love you, peter. And on the other bench in front of that one: to peter, love you always, john.

This is how I imagined it could be.

I was hoping to get some proper park benches but that was impossible.
Garden benches came to the rescue.
I think that this project has taught me the difficulties of putting some work in a public space, (health and safety), next time I would do some more research and get some financial support for the making of the benches.

This work was made in response to Fermyn Woods Contemporay Art Gallery.

I am part of a group of artists called X6 and we had the opportunity to exhibit at that fantastic rural art gallery. The idea was that we had to create something in response to the place or the work that was being exhibited there at that time.

This was the last time that the building was going to be used as a gallery.

My response to the place was the flowers and plants I could see from the studio window of the gallery, the paper I used was paper that was left behind in the bins of the studio by children which they had used for art workshops in the past. The paper had marks and scratches.

One of the artists exhibiting there was an amazing photographer/artist called Claudia Fährenkemper, her work inspired me to use the method of pressing herbs onto paper.

In order to celebrate the new spanish law allowing gay people to get married I produced a piece of work called "Forgive me Father for I have sinned".

In this piece of work the image of the Pope is printed in the colours of the rainbow flag, the symbol of the gay pride.

The image of the Pope is then destroyed or reused to make confetti. That confetti is then used to celebrate the new marriages.

Para celebrar la Ley española que permite a parejas homosexuales casarse he creado esta pieza llamada "perdóneme Padre porque he pecado".

En esta pieza la imagen del Papa ha sido imprimida en los colores de la bandera del Arcoiris, que simboliza el orgullo Gay.

La imagen del Papa es entonces reutilizada/ destruida para crear confetti. Este confetti es después utilizado para celebrar estan nuevas bodas.

DESIRE

A piece of work that works with the idea of desire.

The work shows a piece of wood that has a similar shape to a urinal.

It is made from pieces of a closet/wardrobe, representing the closeted person and his/ hers frustated desires.

Esta es una pieza que trata de hablar de la idea del deseo.

La pieza nos muestra lo que puede ser un urinal.

Esta creado por piezas de armario, representando así a las personas que están "en el armario" y sus frustados deseos.

In this piece of work I am trying to establish relations between religion and desire. The drawings are made with charcoal in pieces of wood.

I have choosen images from different periods of time but they are all religious images of Jesus or Saints.

Next to them or mirroing them I have placed another piece of wood. This time the wood has been burnt, symbolising how religion has used fire to erradicate sin throught history.

En esta pieza he tratado de establecer conexiones entre religion y deseo. Los dibujos están realizados con carboncillo sobre piezas de madera.

He escogido imágenes de diferentes periodos pero todos ellos representan a Jesús o Santos. Al lado de estos dibujos , o delante en forma de espejo, he puesto otra pieza de madera, esta vez la madera ha sido quemada simbolizando el uso que la Iglesia/Religión ha dado al fuego para erradicar pecados o pecadores.
